Penny Wise
For ages 8–11 years

PENNY WISE is ten. She wants to know what ‘money’ is really about and why grown-ups make such a fuss about it. So she decides to find out more and keeps a journal of her discoveries...

The ‘Penny Wise’ books develop the pupil’s interest and awareness of personal finance issues through Penny’s eyes as she writes about, and illustrates, her own experiences of money, its effect on her and her family, and her attempts to make sense of it. The books are fun, amusing and entertaining.

The 'Penny Wise' resource consists of four pupil books:
• Penny Wise finds out about Borrowing
(NEW)
• Penny Wise finds out about Saving
(NEW)
• Penny Wise finds out about Bills
• Penny Wise finds out about Taxes

There are also two teacher's books:

Southgate sampleTales with a Twist
Maths-based Fairy Tales
Lower KS2

How do you engage children in problem-solving activities? This collection of seven modern fairy tales offers the opportunity to teach mathematics and problem-solving with a creative approach.

Each of the stories focuses on an aspect of mathematics, linked to the Primary Framework, allowing children to use and apply their understanding through a familiar context of a fairy tale, with an entertaining twist.

Children become involved in the stories and are eager to solve the problems in order to continue the story and discover the outcome. Mathematical concepts are entwined with the fairy tales, offering children the opportunity to become absorbed in the story and embed their understanding, sometimes without even realising it.

These stories can be used to introduce a concept or to reinforce children's knowledge at the end of a topic.

Discover with your class how Romeo's hair doubles in length to save the stranded Rapunzel or how Snow White helps seven Funny Little Men to become more punctual and to tell the time..
